Summary
On the basis of model substances, a procedure was studied for the detection in situ of fluorescing substances, which also occur as urine constituents, following paper electrophoresis at pH 8.6. Nanogram amounts of aromatic acids are identified without staining or other treatment with the aid of their spectral properties and the relative electrophoretic mobility (reference substance salicyluric acid). The excitationand emission maxima and the relative mobilities of these aromatic acids were determined. In addition a method is given for testing the fluorescent bands with respect to their homogeneity.
