Summary

The method proposed for the structure elucidation of amides is based on the thermal cleavage (pyrohydrolysis) of the compound under examination resulting in the formation of the free amine base and the free acid or the product of decarboxylation of this acid respectively. The procedure is very simple: the compound examined is heated in a glas tube quickly to 300–400° C for 1–2 minutes. Within this time the decomposition takes place and the cleavage products are separated by sublimation or distillation and condense on the cooler parts of the tube. Their identification is carried out by a suitable Chromatographic technique. The principle of the reaction and the use of the procedure also for other classes of compounds are under investigation.
