Neurotransmitter diversity and its role in integrative brain functions

Conclusions

  1. 1.

Significant differences were found in the time of action of L-glutamate, acetylcholine, γ-aminobutyric acid, and noradrenalin, applied microiontophoretically, on the firing pattern of single sensomotor cortical neurons. L-Glutamate and γ-aminobutyric acid evoke short-latency responses of short duration. Responses to acetylcholine and noradrenalin characteristically have much longer latency and duration.

  2. 2.

Because of the specificity of the temporal ranges of action of neurotransmitters on nerve cells, time coding and effective interaction of heterofunctional information in the nervous system are possible.
