Summary
It has been shown that the usual representation of the photographically measured intensity relations of the supplementary and reference lines as the difference of the logarithms of their intensities gives the smallest scattering of the intensity relationships (hence representing the most suitable method of estimation) only when theY-error of both lines in the statistical average is identical in both cases. If, however, they are different, a number, which is easily determined, can be given, which, applied as a weighting factor to the reference line, reduces the scattering to a minimum. The “weightedY-difference” obtained in this way is a generalization of the customary “simpleY-difference” (weight plus one). It eliminates the systematic error occurring in the intensity ratio and produces a considerable diminution of the error in the quantitative analysis, provided the residual accidental proportionate errors are slight. So far as is now known, it appears, in contrast to spark-like procedures, that different values of theY-error appear in the arc. The meaning of this effect is mentioned.
