Summary
Activity was recorded from single C-fibre afferents isolated from the N. saphenus of the cat in response to mechanical, thermal and chemical stimuli at the sensible areal of the skin.
Most fibres, which responded to noxious stimuli at the skin as for instance, temperature above 45°C and below 0°C or application of 75% acetic acid, were also activated by non-noxious mechanical or thermal stimuli (pressure with 400 mg. to 3.5 g. or a drop of temperature of 5 to 15°C). Very often the sensitivity of these fibres was raised after application of noxious stimuli.
Besides these fibres with non-specific receptors some C-fibres were isolated, which responded specifically to noxious stimuli.
