About the motion of a heavy flexible string attached to the satellite in the central field of attraction

Рассматривается движение системы, состоящей из спутника точечной массы с прикрепленной к нему тяжелой, нерастяжимой, гибкой нитью в центральном поле тяготения. Предполагается, что масса нити пренебрежимо мала по сравнению с массой спутника и не оказывает влияния на движение спутника. Исследуется относительное движение нити в предположении, что спутник движется по кеплеровской эллиптической орбите/в частности, круговой/. Показано, что может оказаться неустойчивым то движение гибкой нити, которое устойчиво в случае затвердевшей нити.

Abstract

The motion of a heavy inextensible flexible string attached to the satellite in the central gravitational field is discussed. It is supposed that the mass of the string is infinitesimally small compared to the mass of the satellite and hence it does not affect the latter's motion. Under the assumption that the satellite moves along the Keplerian elliptical orbit (in particular circular orbit), the relative motion of the string is investigated. It has been shown that the motion of the flexible string is unstable which is stable in the case of a solidified string.
