Summary

The Spanish anatomist and surgeon Antonio de Gimbernat y I Arbos can be considered the father of modern inguinal hernia surgery. Based J on his excellent studies of anatomy he went on to describe the most essential structures of the inguinal and femoral regions. Gimbernat's contribution became the groundwork for morphologic studies that govern modern techniques of hernia repair. Moreover, he is credited with themodus operandi involved in the repair of femoral hernia. Antonio de Gimbernat revolutionized hernia surgery. However, the contemporary social and political circumstances that isolated Spain from the rest of Europe were responsible for ignorance of his outstanding contributions. This paper is intended to put his aims in proper prospective.
