Summary
Electroshock therapy in man is followed by an increase of the extracellular fluid volume (thiocyanate space). Measurements of this available fluid compartment after additional therapy with the phenothiazine derivative “Megaphen” is proving a significant diminution of this increase after electroshock. This influence of Megaphen can be reduced to changes in cellular permeability. The increase of the two polarized resistances of cell membranes is synonymous with a stop of dehydration tendency of cell structures. These variations of cellular permeability are measurable by application of direct current on human skin. (Electropermeagraphic method ofKrause, Storz andVoelkel.)
