Summary
The indirect polarographic method for the determination of the nitro group has been extended to the estimation of the nitroso group in organic compounds. The average error was 0.4%, compared with 0.6% for the visual titration method. Indirect polarographic and visual micromethods have also been developed for the successive determination of nitroso and nitro groups in the same solution at room temperature, through pH adjustment. The nitroso group is reduced at pH 0.5 and the nitro group at pH 5.5. With nitroso-dinitro mixtures, however, the visual finish gave correct results only for the nitroso group. In general, the polarographic results are more accurate than the visual ones.
