I. R. A.-400 (Cl− bzw.
Summary
Two methods have been developed for the rapid determination of uranium in sea- and river waters. By this procedure, the uranyl ion can be directly determined polarographically after a single column operation and without any preliminary evaporation of the samples and without any extraction of the samples. In the case of sea waters, the gathering of the uranium is in the form of negatively charged chloride-, with river waters as negative uranyl acetate complex, which are retained quantitatively in the pH ranges 3 to 9 or 4.25 to 5.25 respectively by the strongly basic anion exchange resin Amberlite I. R. A.-400 (Cl− or Ac−). After washing the resin with a buffer solution of pH = 5.0 (HCl + NaAc) and with distilled water, the uranium can be eluted with 0.8N hydrochloric acid and determined polarographically. The uranium content of a 1 liter sample of water can be determined within 8 hours with a mean accuracy of ± 10 to 15%.
