Summary
Nitroso compounds oxidize diphenylbenzidine in 85% sulfuric acid to yield a blue quinoidal dyestuff. The oxidation is due to the nitroso group, and not to nitrous acid which may be split off. This reaction is the basis of a spot test for nitroso compounds; it will reveal around1 μg. All true nitroso compounds give this reaction, but not isonitroso compounds, which can be regarded as oximes.
