Summary
The chief application field of the valence band spectra at present is the reference to the K-bands of Be, B, C, O, N and F for purposes of qualitative and quantitative elementary analysis. Since the quantitative electron beam analysis was developed primarily on the basis of the Röntgen spectrographic examination of the “heavy elements” (for instance: iron), the conventional unaltered application of the measuring technique and evaluation to the “lighter elements” leads to analytical errors because of the binding dependence on the structure parameter of the valence band spectra. Using the example of the analysis of oxygen in different compounds it was found that the error amounted to 30 relative percent if no account was taken, as is usually the case, of the chemical shifting and the alterations in the form parameters. To eliminate this error a series of proposals was made: namely either modify the experimental technique — say by measuring the total intensities of a band of lower the resolving power of the spectrometer — or make a very careful choice of the standard. Finally there is the further possibility of extending the conventional corrections in the measured values in order to introduce a mathematical correctional procedure.
The employment of the extended correctional procedure to the oxygen determination in Al2O3 and SiO2 (standard MgO) shows that the intensity- and shift correction can be conducted with adequate exactness, whereas the absorption correction, which has an approximately 20% relative per cents on the result, is burdened with an uncertainty of 10–15 relative per cents.
The quantitative analysis of the elements of the 2nd period, which is important from the technical aspects, can be improved without doubt, but nonetheless further uncertainties, which for the most part are not due to the characteristics of the valence band spectra, persist unchanged.
