A procedure for the separation of sub-microgram quantities of lead and bismuth by vacuum evaporation

Summary

A procedure has been developed for the separation of submicrogram quantities of lead from similar amounts of bismuth by the preferential evaporation of lead chloride from a platinum surface in vacuum. Because separation is rendered inefficient with such small quantities by dominance of the differing adhesive bonding over the uniform cohesive bonds it was found necessary to use cadmium chloride as carrier. The separation achieved was better than is possible with a wet chemical method. The observations are described and discussed.
