Summary
In preliminary studies various reagents were tested for the removal of131J from platinum foils after treatment with pure131J or solutions of fission products. It was found that131J can be removed in simple fashion from platinum and likewise from super-refined steel by alkaline perhydrol solution. The same mixture can be employed to remove131J from the walls of irradiation containers after radiation experiments with test burner elements. Through subsequent determination of the131J it was possible to obtain approximate values for the deposition of the nuclide in the primary cycle of high temperature reactors.
In the leachings, after chemical separation, it was possible in addition to identify the radionuclides46Sc,51Cr,58Co,60Co,65Zr,110mAg and124Sb as activation- as well as137Cs,140Ba and90Sr as fission products and134Cs as activated fission product.
Through subsequent etching with nitric-hydrofluoric acid, it could be demonstrated that by means of the alkaline procedure, the total131J but only a portion of uranium fission products that had deposited on the capsule walls could be removed, since no carrier could be added.
