Summary
Phenylsulfuric acid can be readily detected through the release of phenol on heating with dilute mineral acids.
On heating with succinic acid to 220° C, phenolsulfonic acids and 1-naphthol-sulfonic acids yield phenol and 1-naphthol, respectively.
The volatile phenols can be detected in the gas phase by the Gibbs indophenol reaction, and this makes possible a sensitive test for phenol- and 1-naphtholsulfonic acids.
