Determination of aromatic nitrogen heterocycles in air samples by high-speed liquid chromatography

Summary

The potential of a silver impregnated adsorbent for the analysis of aromatic nitrogen heterocycles by high-speed liquid chromatography has been studied. With a UV monitor (254 nm) linear calibration curves were obtained and detection limits were 0.2–25 ng per injection (1-m column) for the compounds studied. A number of environmental residue samples and high-volume air filters were analyzed for possible interferences and/or the occurrence of any aromatic nitrogen heterocycles. The analysis of spiked air filter extracts gave results that were within 1–10% of known values. The future potential of the silver column and metal impregnated columns in general is discussed.

Zusammenfassung

Das Adsorptionsvermögen eines mit Silber imprägnierten Adsorptionsmittels bei der Analyse aromatischer Stickstoffheterocyklen durch Hochgeschwindigkeitsflüssigchromatographie wurde untersucht. Mit einem UV-Meßgerät (254 nm) erhält man lineare Eichkurven; die Nachweisgrenze beträgt 0,2–25 ng pro injizierter Probe (1-m-Säule). Eine Reihe Umweltrückstandsproben und Luftfilter wurden hinsichtlich möglicher Störungen und/oder des Vorkommens aromatischer N-Heterocyklen analysiert. Luftfilterextrakte mit bekannten Zusätzen ergaben Analysenwerte, die 1–10% von den erwarteten Ergebnissen abwichen. Die künftige Einsatzmöglichkeit der Silbersäule und metallimprägnierter Säulen im allgemeinen wurde erörtert.
