Summary
The oxidation efficiency of barium chromate, cobalt (II, III)-oxide, decomposition product of silver permanganate and copper oxide as combustion catalyst in the determination of carbon and hydrogen in organic compounds was tested under standard conditions. Cholesterol was used as test substance and the lowest temperature was ascertained at which the combustion of 8μmols cholesterol to CO2 and H2O just proceeds quantitatively. The trials were carried out with a layer of catalyst 4 cm long and likewise with 16 millimols of catalyst. It was concluded from the results that barium chromate should be regarded as a highly effective catalyst in the C-H determination; in particular it was shown that 16 mmols catalyst is far more active than cupric oxide and furthermore that it is almost as active as cobalt (II, III)-oxide and the decomposition product of silver permanganate.
