Summary
This paper deals with a study of the length of the oxidation layer for the determination of carbon monoxide. For this purpose the conversion in layers of various lengths was determined. It was found that the shortest layer length at which the CO is just quantitatively oxidized is greatly dependent on the activity of the oxidation material. With anhydrous iodic acid a length of 17cm (30 g of the compound) is required, as against 1mm (0.15g) in the case of iodine pentoxide and 3mm (0.50g) with commercial “iodine pentoxide for analysis of flue gas”. A quantitative study was also made of the influence of the rate of flow of the purging gas on the conversion of CO. Another point of interest was the separation of iodine by products that may form during the cracking of organic compounds such as H2, C2H2, C2H4, COS, and CS2. The extent of the reaction of these cracking products on layers of various lengths was determined. It was found that the interfering separation of iodine can be much lessened if layers with slight activity are employed. On the basis of these findings, the conditions are stated under which the iodometric determination of carbon monoxide can be employed and likewise the conditions for iodine pentoxide and anhydrous iodic acid.
