Summary

This paper presents a micromethod for the characterization of the alkaloids obtained from the Pearly Gates variety of the morning glory plant (Ipomoea violacea). Using 150μg of total alkaloid and mass spectrometry after thin layer chromatographic separation, the absolute identification of six alkaloids (lysergic acid amide,iso- lysergic acid amide, ergonovine, ergometrinine, argroclavine, elymoclavine) has been established. The proposed fragmentation patterns are described. The presence of another alkaloid, chanoclavine, in the leaves is discussed.
