Summary
A simple, reasonably accurate, and reproducible method for the simultaneous determination of iron and aluminium is reported. The method is based on the formation of tris(1,10-phenanthroline)iron(II) at pH 2.8 and its subsequent extraction as an ion-pair with perchlorate or trichloroacetate into chloroform. The colour of the complex is measured at 490 nm, and Beer's law is obeyed up to 40μg of iron. The aluminium is converted into its tris(8-quinolinol) complex in alkaline medium in the presence of EDTA as masking agent, and the complex is extracted with carbon tetrachloride. The absorbance of the complex is measured at 400 nm and Beer's law is obeyed up to 100μg of aluminium. The method can be used to determine iron and aluminium in plant tissue and in the potassium chloride extracts of soils.
