Summary
The gas volumetric semimicro method for determining N—N-groups was used successfully for the determination of the diazo group in stable and stabilized diazo compounds. When the substance is oxidatively decomposed with chromic acid and sulfuric acid in a closed system the diazo group is split off as elementary nitrogen that is collected in an azotometer and measured. If two other nitrogen atoms bound to each other are also present they too are liberated in the form of elementary nitrogen. By combining this method with the decomposition of the sample by dilute hydrochloric acid (warm) with addition of copper(II) chloride as catalyst it is often possible to determine diazo groups selectively in the presence of other N—N- or nitro-groups. If the substance also contains amino or nitro groups, these yield ammonia and nitric acid respectively. The ammonia is distilled off and determined acidimetrically; the nitric acid is reduced to ammonia and then determined in the same manner.
