Summary
The orthophosphoric acid produced in the combustion of phosphorusbearing organic compounds afterSchöniger and the subsequent boiling of the pure aqueous solution of the combustion products is titrated acidimetrically. The titration in greatly concentrated solution in the presence of thymolphthalein as indicator includes the first and second dissociation stages. With samples weighing from 4–40 mg and with phosphorus contents from 4–14%, the maximal error is ±0.3% P, and much less as a rule. The method fails with samples which contain still other elements in addition to carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and phosphorus. The advantages of the procedure as compared with other methods are pointed out. The conditions essential to a quantitative conversion of the phosphorus into orthophosphoric acid and its precise titration were studied and are discussed.
