Summary
A study was made of the Chromatographic separation of naphthalene sulfonic acids with electrolyte solutions. While the sequence of the flecks of naphthalene sulfonic acids with various numbers of sulfonic groups is reminiscent of the separation on “inverse phases”, the order of the isomeric naphthalene sulfonic acids corresponds essentially to a normal separation with a more polar stable phase. The sequence is not influenced by the nature of the cation or anion nor by the reaction of the electrolyte employed for developing. The Rf values are dependent only on the concentration of the electrolyte used. The separation of naphthalene sulfonic acids with solutions of electrolytes is explained by means of the principles of distribution chromatography.
