Summary
The influence of the ph-value on the oxidation of tartaric and glycolic acid with permanganate was studied. It was found that in buffered weak acid solutions (ph 4 or 4.5) the oxidation of both materials proceeds rapidly and quantitatively to carbon dioxide and water. Permanganate is a relatively stable reagent in the above milieu provided the temperature does not exceed 40° C. The information obtained was used to develop a rapid and reliable oxydimetric determination of the materials studied, the unused permanganate being converted to the pyrophosphate complex of trivalent manganese and then titrated with standard hydroquinone solution.
