Summary
The rare earths form with N,N-bis-(2-hydroxyethyl)glycine(BHG) and with N-2-hydroxyethyl-iminodiacetic acid (HIDA) 1∶1 and 1∶2 chelates. Their composition and approximate stabilities are determined by means of a paper electrophoretic method. HIDA-complexes of the rare earths appeared to be very useful for their electrophoretic separation. In a 0.05 molar (about 1%) solution of HIDA, ph being 2–2.5, there is possible to separate completely the light rare earths Sc-Y-La-Ce-Pr-Nd-Sm-Eu-Gd-Tb. The reasons for a perfect separation of Pm from Nd and Sm are given too. In the group of the erbium earths, it is possible to separate Dy(Ho)-Er-Tm, but the separation Dy-Ho and Tm-Yb-Lu fails. The approximate stability constants of the mentioned complexes and the electrophoretic separation factors are given.
