Summary
In connection with the determination of carbon, a study was made of the pyrolysis of organic compounds in streaming ammonia and the transformation of the pyrolysis products to hydrogen cyanide. The findings may summed up as follows:
-
1.
The conversion of the methane formed daring pyrolysis is very rapid and can be accomplished with a slight excess of ammonia.
-
2.
The conversion of carbon monoxide proceeds via methane as intermediate product. The reaction is autocatalytic, its rate increases in the presence of hydrogen cyanide.
-
3.
Hydrogen cyanide is not stable at high temperatures in the presence of water. However, the hydrolysis proceeds slowly on platinum catalysts. No hydrolysis occurs with gas velocities exceeding 350 ml per minute.
-
4.
Platinum wool proved most suitable for the catalytic conversion of carbon oxides and hydrocarbons. With throughput of a single micro sample, the activated condition of the catalyst can be reached at 1150°.
-
5.
The formation rate of hydrogen cyanide from elementary carbon and ammonia increases with the temperature. Complete conversion of the carbon is accomplished in 3 to 4 minutes.
-
6.
The hydrogen cyanide is absorbed in a cold water-free solution. The hydrogen nitride produced during the analysis of azo compounds is most simply decomposed by oxidation with iodine.
