Summary
A new, very sensitive resin spot procedure for detecting heavy metals with 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol (PAN) and 4-(2-pyridylazo)-resorcinol (PAR) is proposed. The colors obtained with 28 heavy metal ions on anion and cation exchange resins are described. Very sensitive color reactions occur with 19 of these ions. The identification limits for several typical heavy metal ions are given and show the superiority of this procedure over the customary spot methods. A discussion of the oxidation state of cobalt as central atom of the chelates with PAN and PAR is given on the basis of the ligand field theory.
