Summary
2′-hydroxychalcones and boron trifluoride diethyl etherate react not only in the spot test but also in the paper chromatogram with formation of stable coordination compounds. These compounds are difluoro boron esters. The reaction has marked bathochromic effect.
In contrast to the other reagent suggested for 2′-hydroxychalcones, namely antimony(V) chloride, the reaction products obtained with boron trifluoride are stable in the air and do not lose their color.
For the first time, the resulting colors have been characterized objectively. The subjective errors attached hitherto to a characterization of the color tone are therefore avoided. Color reactions, which often are viewed as non-specific and of limited value for scientific purposes, thus obtain the same authority as every other method, in which measurements and weights are involved as fundamental values.
A number of reaction products, obtained from 2′-hydroxychalcones of an homologous series and boron trifluoride-diethyl etherate, were studied with regard to the portions responsible for the color value, i. e. the position of the color site in the color triangle was established and the brightness were determined quantitatively. Certain color tones, which hitherto have been described as being of different colors, were measured objectively and the differences established in this way. A color reaction was thus for the first time made objectively assessable for differential-diagnostic purposes.
