Summary
The absorption curves in the ultraviolet and the visible region were determined for 1-hydroxy-7-dimethylaminophenoxazone-(3) (I) and 1-methyl-7-dimethylaminophenoxazone-(3) (II) in 50% ethanol. The pH-curves, the absorption curves of I and II in sulfuric acid of various concentrations, and the IR spectra were also determined. The ionization constants were calculated from the pH-curves; also of I in a 2 % ethanol solution. Likewise determinations were made of the ionization constants of 2-hydroxy- and 2-aminophenoxazone-(3). I and II were used as acid-base indicators for titrations in aqueous and nonaqueous media. Strong acids, bases and indirectly also ammonia may be determined against the indicator II, whereas indicator I can be employed in the determination of picric acid in acetone, and pyridine as well as of 2,4-dinitrophenol in pyridine.
