Summary
An analytical procedure was developed for the determination of small amounts of uranium in the presence of excess phosphoric acid. The addition of sulfuric acid to the phosphoric acid solution converts the uranium into an anionically charged uranyl sulfate complex, which is bound in a micro column to the anion exchanger Amberlite IRA-400, whereas the phosphoric acid and other impurities flow away. After elution with 1N HCl, evaporation to dryness and fuming off of the sulfuric acid, the residue is taken up in 0.01N nitric acid and polarographed. Uranium concentrations up to 0.01μg/ml can be polarographed by means of a nitrate reduction wave catalyzed by uranium.
