Summary
A new method was developed for determining carbonyl. It is based on the reaction of the oxo-compound with hydroxylamine and titration of the excess with 0.1M K3[Fe(CN)6] or with 0.1N iodine. The titration is conducted in strong alkaline solution with potentiometric determination of the endpoint. The ferricyanide solution is preferable as titrant. The optimal conditions were determined for the formation of oxime, especially with respect to the alkalinity of the solution. These conditions permit the completion of the reaction at room temperature within 1 hour at most, even in the case of a very poor reactivity of the carbonyl compound, as in the case of acetophenone, glucose lactose, etc. In this respect, and likewise because of the definiteness of the endpoint, the new method is distinctly superios to the modifications described previously.
