Summary
PAN forms sparingly soluble precipitates with many metal ions. The precipitates are easy to filter. It is a peculiarity of PAN, that it is itself only sparingly soluble in water. This enables the reagent to act both as a precipitant for metals and as a collector for minimum amounts of the metal panates formed. This behaviour permits to precipitate microgram amounts of metals from 30 to 100 ml solution in a highly reproducible manner. The conditions for the precipitation of titanium, vanadium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc and lead were investigated. Separations can be achieved by the choice of different pH values and by using masking agents.
