Summary
A limit is set for the detectability of a spectral line by the fact that the line radiation issuing from the light source is overlain by a continuous background radiation. With decreasing intensity of a spectral line, this eventually sinks into the background. The point at which a line sinks into the background is determined basically by the characteristics of the emulsion used and in fact by the granularity distribution and the gradation. By using theSeidel transformation it is shown how granularity distribution and gradation can be employed to determine the relation of intensity of line and background at which the line is just still emerging from the background. This relation is given numerically for several emulsions that are frequently used.
