Summary
The determination of small amounts of iodine in substances containing both fat and albumin involves considerable difficulties. The methods commonly used till now, most of which have been elaborated for the determination of the iodine content in blood, do not always answer the purpose. By the combination of different principles, a method could be developed which yields good results even for substances difficult to analyse. The substance to be examined is previously submitted to an alkaline treatment at a relatively low temperature. Then it is incinerated with acid permanganate solution. The iodine contained in the ashes is set free by reduction with phosphorous acid and distillation. By the liberated iodine an equivalent amount of hydroxylamine is transformed into nitrite, which is finally determined colorimetrically by the ordinary reaction with sulphanilic acid andα-naphthylamine. The above procedure is fit for general application to substances where simpler methods for the isolation of iodine fail to work.
