Summary
Following a short survey of the apparatus most commonly used in mass spectrosopy, a discussion is given, based on examples, of the most important analytical procedures with special reference to the quantitative determination of very small amounts of material. The discussion includes mass spectrometric gas analyses, analyses of solids through high frequency sparks, and analyses by means of complete volatilization of the samples in the mass spectrometer. In conclusion, special attention is paid to dilution analyses conducted with the aid of separated stable isotopes. By means of examples it is shown that the use of mass speetrornetric methods of analysis makes it possible to determine accurately quantities of gas below 10−8 ml and amounts of solids as small as 10−9g. The qualitative limits of detection are much lower still in numerous cases.
