Summary
Trivalent cerium can be separated from other fission products, utilizing the high synergistic enhancement of its extraction by the mixture of thenoyltrifluoroacetone-trioctyl phosphine oxide. Uranium, zirconium and other elements are extracted too, remain however in the organic phase, when cerium is back extracted into lN acid solutions. Separation from other rare earth elements can not be achieved, while cesium and strontium are not extracted.
The optimal extraction conditions were investigated thoroughly, and also the effect of various solvents and anions, respectively; chloroacetate buffer can be used advantageously for adjusting the pH of the solution.
High amounts of iron and cobalt interfere with the determination of cerium and must be separated by extraction of their thiocyanate complexes with methyl isobutyl ketone.
