Summary

Using the spectrophotometric method it was established that mandelhydroxamic acid in a basic medium, in dependence of pH, forms with copper(II) coloured soluble complexes. Analysing the absorption curves of these complexes at different pH values and on the basis of dependence ofλ max from pH it was established that in the pH range 11.6–13.50 a complex of violet colour is formed. The composition of this complex was determined by spectrophotometric methods. It was concluded that the stoichiometric ratio of copper(II) and mandelhydroxamic acid is 1∶2. The appearent constant of complex formation was determined. The values of logK′ was found to be 7.365 (μ=0.2;t=25°C). The colour of the complex obeys the Beer's law in the concentration range of copper(II) from 12–63μg/ml.
