Endoscopic sphincterotomy for pancreatobiliary emergencies —review

  • Published:
Journal of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery

Abstract

In the past two decades, the development of endoscopic sphincterotomy marked a major advancement in the treatment of pancreatobiliary disorders. Conditions which required traditional surgery in the past can now be effectively managed with therapeutic endoscopies. The application of endoscopy in emergencies was soon established worldwide. Critically ill patients who may not have withstood general anaesthesia can now be treated with much lower rates of morbidity and mortality. We review the role of endoscopic sphincterotomy in the treatment of various pancreatobiliary emergencies.
