Some aspects of the evaluation of environmental reference samples-A look at the material homogeneity and statistical approaches for collaborative tests

Summary

Collaborative tests for the evaluation of environmental SRMs frequently show poor uniformity. Two major problems not directly connected with the technical difficulties of the individual analytical procedure arise, namely

  1. (1)

the estimation of the uniformity of the material and the sampling error and

  2. (2)

the proper statistical treatment of the round-robin results to extract the best overall mean.

Approaches to both problems are discussed and examplified by the evaluation of three candidate SRMs for environmental samples.
