Spectrophotometric determination of iron in aluminium alloys using 2-(5-bromo-2-pyridylazo)-5-diethylaminophenol

Summary

A sensitive and selective spectrophotometric method has been developed for the determination of iron, based on the formation of a purple-red complex with 2-(5-bromo-2-pyridylazo)-5-diethylamino-phenol. The coloured complex is stable over the pH range 3–10 and exhibits two absorption maxima at 562 nm (ɛ=8.8×l04l· mol−1·cm−1) and 753 nm (ɛ=3.4×104l·mol−1·cm−1) respectively. Iron in aluminium alloys has been determined by this method with satisfactory results.

Zusammenfassung

Ein empfindliches und selektives Verfahren zur Eisenbestimmung wurde ausgearbeitet. Es beruht auf der Bildung einer purpurroten Komplexverbindung mit 2-(5-Brorn-2-pyridylazo)-5-diethylaminophenol. Diese ist zwischen pH 3 und 10 beständig und zeigt zwei Absorptionsmaxima bei 562 nm und 753 nm. Die Bestimmung von Eisen in Aluminiumlegierungen ergab zufriedenstellende Resultate.
