Summary
A method for qualitative and quantitative determination of phenolic acids in vegetable oil was developed. Interfering components were removed by use of solid phase extraction. The extract of phenolic acids was separated by reversed phase HPLC and the substances were determined with a coulometric multielectrode detector. Because of its sensitivity and selectivity the detection system enables a reliable qualitative and quantitative determination of phenolic acids. Their content varies between 10 μg and 15 mg/kg. The detection limits are between 50 and 250 pg (S/N=3). The recovery of the characteristic acids is in the range 82.8 and 96.8% (RSD=1.6–10.6%). Some vegetable oils display a distribution pattern that can be used for identification. It is also possible to differentiate between raw and refined vegetable oil because of the lack of phenolic acids in refined products.
