Recent developments in infrared spectroelectrochemistry

Abstract

In the present paper an overview is given of the various infrared spectroscopic in situ methods which allow the investigation of electrode surfaces in the presence of an electrolyte and during the progress of an electrochemical process. Special emphasis is placed on those methods which use the Fourier transform technique. A brief description of the various infrared spectroscopic in situ methods is given and their capabilities and limitations are discussed. Typical examples are presented, particularly the spectroelectrochemical investigations of the oxidation-reduction behaviour of polyaniline and the reactions of an iron electrode in alkaline solutions.
