Automatic C, H, N, O elemental analysis without weighing

Summary

Automatic elemental C, H, N, O analysis is described, based on frontal gas chromatography. Particular attention is devoted to the possibilities of analysing samples without having to weigh them. Results are presented for the simultaneous determination of oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen by pyrolysis of the sample in a stream of helium, conversion of the pyrolysis products on a carbon contact, and oxidation of CO and H₂ to CO₂ and H₂O, respectively. This technique permits a simple change-over from C, H, N analysis to O, H, N analysis by replacement of the packings of the reaction tubes. A minicomputer can be used to advantage for continuous operation of one or more analysers.

Zusammenfassung

Die automatische Elementaranalyse auf der Grundlage der frontal-gaschromatographischen Bestimmung von C, H, N und O wurde beschrieben. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit wurde der Möglichkeit gewidmet, Proben ohne vorherige Wägung zu analysieren. Ergebnisse der gleichzeitigen Bestimmung von O, H und N durch Pyrolyse der Substanz im Heliumstrom, Konvertierung der Pyrolyseprodukte an einem Kohlekontakt und Oxydation von CO und H₂ zu CO₂ bzw. H₂O wurden mitgeteilt. Dieses Verfahren ermöglicht die einfache Umstellung von der C, H, N-Analyse auf die O, H, N-Analyse durch Austausch der Rohrfüllungen. Ein Minicomputer kann vorteilhafterweise für die kontinuierliche Arbeit mit einem oder mehreren Geräten verwendet werden.
