Summary
Gallium (III) ions react with morpholine-N-dithiocarboxylic acid morpholinium (MDCM) with formation of a chelate. The latter may be extracted quantitatively with chloroform in the pH-range 2.3–3.6. The extraction constant is 1010.1. A working procedure of a new ultravioletspectrophotometric determination of small amounts of gallium is given. The absorbance is to be measured at 267 nm or 310 nm with corresponding molar absorptivities of 1.97 · 104 and 2.44 · 103 l · mole−1 · cm−1, respectively. The statistical test of the proposed determination of gallium shows a conformity to Beer's law for 0.3 to 30 ppm of gallium. Besides that the method is characterized by a high sensitivity, small determination limit and good values for standard deviation. The efficiency and usefullness of the method is tested by means of geochemical standards and environmental fly ashes.
