Potentiometric semimicrodetermination of some triazoles, diazoles, and triazenes

Summary

Heterocyclic nitrogen compounds possessing a free hydrogen atom on the secondary amino nitrogen and at least two heterocyclic nitrogen atoms can be determined by potentiometric titration with silver nitrate in the presence of borate buffer. Triazenes react similarly. Water-soluble compounds can be determined in aqueous solution; others are determined in methanol. Emf's were monitored with a sulfide ion-selective indicator electrode and a double-junction reference electrode. If the hydrogen atom on the secondary amino nitrogen is replaced by another moiety then the acidic character of the molecule is lost and it cannot be analyzed by this method. The method works when substituents such as nitro, halogen, or alkyl groups are present. The presence of amino groups results in a different stoichiometry, each nitrogen-containing molecule requiring 1.5 mol of silver ions.
