Summary
The AAS analysis of the Ca, Mg, Sr content of special steels was reported, as well as disturbances of the analysis and their elimination. After dissolving the steel sample with HCl-HNO3, the iron was extracted from 6.5 N HCl with methylisobutylketone. The atomic absorption in the air-acetylene flame of the extraction residue was measured with a Beckman model 485. It was found that the iron content of about 0.1 to 0.01% remaining after extraction disturbed the Sr determination to the greatest extent and the Mg determination to the least extent. The presence of phosphorus also disturbs the Sr determination to the greatest extent and the Mg determination to the least extent. The disturbing effect of silicon is equally great for all three elements. In the presence of 0.9% LaCl3, however, the disturbance due to iron as well as that due to phosphorus and silicon can be compensated well for all three elements.
