Summary
The reaction of iron(II) with 2-nitroso-5-dimethylaminophenol (nitroso-DMAP) was studied in 88% (v/v)-ethylene carbonate-water mixture (EC solution). The iron(II) complex with nitroso-DMAP is of 1:4 composition (iron(II): nitroso-DMAP) and is stable in EC solution at about pH 9. Acrylic polymer and fiber samples can be dissolved in EC solution and the absorbance of the iron(II) complex with nitroso-DMAP was measured at 760 nm. P. p. m. amounts of iron in acrylic polymers and fibers are determined spectrophotometrically with nitroso-DMAP without prior ashing. The proposed method is simple, rapid, selective, precise and sensitive (molar absorptivity: 3.9×104 1·mol-1·cm-1).
