Summary
-
1.
When phenol. or a mixture of phenol and sodium phenoxide, is heated with red phosphorus under pressure and in presence of water, a mixture of phosphorus-containing organic compounds is obtained; in contains phenylphosphine, diphenylphusphine. and triphenyl phosphate.
-
2.
When a mixture of phenol, sodium pheroxide, and red phosphorus is heated under pressure in absence of water, diphenyl ether and traces of organophosphorus compounds of unknown structure are obtained.
-
3.
In absence of water. phenol does not react with red phosphorus. either at atmospheric pressure, or at elevated pressures,
-
4.
A hypothesis is advanced concerning the nature of the reaction of phosphorus with phenol under the experimental conditions used.
