Conclusion
-
1.
At the mesencephalic level there are three systems of structural connections responsible for functional relations between the two halves of the forebrain.
-
2.
One of these systems of connections (commissural connections between the superior colliculi) conducts afferent modality-specific (visual) influences, the second (reticular connections) conducts efferent (effector) influences, and the third system (colliculo-reticular connections) evidently conducts efferent and coordinating influences.
-
3.
At the mesencephalic level a system of structural connections is distinguished which participate in functional integration of the forebrain as a single entity. It consists of functional projections of each superior colliculus to the contralateral posterior thalamic group of nuclei through the reticular formation alone and (or) through the reticular formation and contralateral superior colliculus.
