Ultrastructure of the locus coeruleus in the brain of rats in early ontogenesis

Abstract

Development of the LC was studied electron-microscopically in 18-day-old fetuses as well as in 1-, 5-, and 12-day-old rats. The cellular bodies of the LC neurons are not distinguished by a more rapid maturation, in distinction from the axons which are comparable with adult animals in the length and width of coverage of the brain in 12–15-day-old fetuses of rate. Ultrastructural indexes testifying the existence of a well developed transport system of substances through the blood barrier were found in the prenatal and early postnatal periods. It has been concluded that the transport of substances in early ontogenesis is of centripetal nature, i.e., toward the cells of the LC.
